From Nightcap to Night's Rest: Fun Facts for Better Sleep Habits

Updated: Mar 7

Most people know that a good night’s sleep can help improve your mood, increase mental clarity and creativity, boost performance, and aid in weight loss.

But if you’re like most adults, you’re starved for sleep (only 63 percent get the recommended eight hours per night).

Here are some fun facts to help you hit the sheets earlier tonight.

  • Skip the nightcap. Drinking alcohol close to bedtime can disrupt your sleep and leave you feeling less than refreshed in the morning. Go for a cup of herbal tea instead.

  • Lack of sleep can affect hormone levels (negatively) that let you know when you should eat and put the bag of chips away.

  • Well-rested individuals feel more attractive….need I say more?

  • Get your sweat on… Exercise before bed (at least two hours before) to reduce stress and clear your mind for a good night’s rest.

  • Sleeping an extra hour on the weekend disturbs your circadian rhythm. Stick with your weekday sleep schedule; you should find Monday morning a little brighter.

  • An afternoon nap can improve your mood, alertness, and performance for the rest of the day.

  • The first step to a good night’s sleep? A bedtime routine. Going to bed at the same time every night helps support your body’s natural rhythm and can help fight daytime fatigue.

  • A good night’s sleep can reduce the production of cortisol (the stress hormone), which likes to store fat like a hibernating bear.

  • Individuals who sleep 7-8 hours daily tend to feel more optimistic. Keep your glass half full!
